Stitching:
Cut off about a 20” length of Black Yarn and weave in the stitch design pictured below. It is located around the upper left corner of the top of the hat.

Earflap Knobs:
Start off with a Magic Circle
Row 1: 6 sc in Magic Circle
Row 2: inc each sc around (12 sc total)
Row 3: sl st into the back loop only of each sc around
Row 4-6: sc each st around.
Tie off. Repeat to make 2 knobs.
Fill each knob with Poly-fil or your filling, then pin down in the center of each earflap and sew on using Grey Thread.

Strings & Puffballs:
For Infant & Toddler/Child Size Hats: Connect Green Yarn with a sl st to the center sc st on the bottom of the earflap. Ch 40, tie off. Connect Black yarn in sc st next to green ch. Ch 40, tie off. Connect Black yarn in sc st on the other side of green ch. Ch 40, tie off. Braid the 3 chains together and tie ends together. Repeat on other earflap.

For Adult Standard and Adult Large Hats: Connect Green Yarn with a sl st to the center sc st on the bottom of the earflap. Ch 50, tie off. Connect Black yarn in sc st next to green ch. Ch 50, tie off. Connect Black yarn in sc st on the other side of green ch. Ch 50, tie off. Braid the 3 chains together and tie ends together. Repeat on other earflap.

Puffballs: Cut a small length of yarn, about 6 inches. This will be used to tie together the puffball. Wrap a good amount of yarn around the base of your fingers (pictured above). Cut yarn once you have a decent amount wrapped. Carefully remove yarn from your fingers and tie the 6” of yarn from earlier around center of bundle. Connect yarn bundle to the bottom of the braided chains. Cut the ends of the yarn bundle to create the puffball (pictured below). It is not necessary, but I would suggest sewing the center of the puffballs so you cannot easily pull out lengths of string.

Weave in and cut off all loose ends and enjoy!!!

The ear flap hats are very good to see. I really like the finish you got in that cap. This page gives a very good description of the steps involved in the stitching. Thanks a lot for sharing this page.
